What is FTP

FTP Software

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a communications protocols used mostly with Internet-Based systems. Once you create your Web site, FTP software is the easiest way to upload files to yours site. If you are connected to a UNIX-Based Web server and have a text-based telecommunications package, you can access FTP directly at a UNIX command prompt. The most common FTP software packages are listed below by platform.

1) Fetch is the primary shareware FTP utility for the MacOS. In addition to being able to upload and download files with Fetch, you can also upload and download files with Fetch; you can also upload or download multiple files at the same time with version 3.0 or later. If for some reason you need to issue an FTP command from within Fetch, you can do that as well.

2) Cute FTP is a shareware FTP utility for Windows-Based machines. The feature set is mostly the same as Fetch although it's a little easier to get around in, especially if you're familiar with drag-and-drop tools. It's a good product, and I use it all the time.

SLIP OR PPP software

Unless you're accessing the Web through a network connection at your work or school, you need SLIP or PPP software to access the Web with a dial-up Internet account. Dial-up software is built into Windows 95 operating system. If you're using Mac, I recommend Free PPP 1.05 (2.5 if you're using Open transport).

File Compression Software

Compression utilities decompress downloaded files or compress files for distribution across the Internet. Several different kinds of file compression utilities exist. The most common are listed Belo by platform.

Stuffit Lite from Aladdin Systems is the main shareware compression utility for the MacOS. It supports most of the common compression file formats for both Mac and PC, such as .sit, .hqx, and .bin, Support for other file compression formats is available with Aladdin's companion product, Drop stuff.

WinZip is the main shareware compression utility for Windows-based machines. Unlike Stuffit lite, WinZip only compresses and decompresses in the zip file format. If you are going to upload and download files from a Windows machine, this shouldn't be a problem, as zipped files are the norm for windows-compatible compressed files.

Web Design utilities

One of the more mundane elements of doing Web design is handling the various types of small problems, which tend to add up quickly. Fortunately, many of the tasks that are part of the day-to-day process of Web Design are relatively easy with the right software. The tools listed below are designed to help your Web design process be both efficient and creative at the same time.

Interlaced Image Generator

Interlaced image generators take an existing graphics file in GIF or JPEG format and convert it into an n interlaced format. Interlaced GIFs and JPEGs display the whole image in progressive layers, adding a little more detail each time. The advantage of interlaced images is that they allow a rough depiction of the image to be immediately viewable, as opposed to the image displaying only once the entire image is loaded.
Interlaced image generator utilities include the following:
GIF converter – A shareware interlaced GIF utility for the MacOS. While it’s main purpose is to convert standard GIF files to interlaced GIFs, it also has many other features, including dithering control and non-GIF conversion, such as TIFF or PICT.
